Early Goal Lifts Bears to Victory Over Cortland
POTSDAM, NY-
Conor Harold (St. Catherine's ONT/Governor Simcoe) scored just 24 seconds into
the game and the defense held up as the men's soccer team defeated Cortland 2-0 on Friday
afternoon. It is the Bears first victory over the Red Dragons in five years.
Harold dribbled past Cortland
goalkeeper Steve Axtell and the ball rolled into the net to give the Bears an
early lead. The game would remain 1-0
until late in the second half when Matt Rudd (Rodman/South Jefferson) shot over
Axtell's head to put Potsdam
up 2-0.
Cortland
led in shots 11-4 but only had three shots on goal. Bears goalkeeper Joseph Glackin
(Latham/Shaker) made three saves in goal. Axtell had one save for Cortland.
The Bears host Oswego
tomorrow at 3 pm.

Bears Shutout Caz 3-0
CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men shutout the Cazenovia Wildcats 3-0 in Saturday afternoon's road game at Cazenovia. Potsdam now moves to 2-4-1 while Caz goes to 3-4.
The Bears got on the scoreboard early, netting their first goal less than three minutes into the contest. Gregory Bennett (Buffalo\Kenmore) supplied the ball on a right cross and Tim Ciampa (Castleton\Maple Hill) finished it off with a header to give Potsdam the early 1-0 advantage. Neither team scored the remainder of the period.
In second half action, Potsdam again connected early as Billy Sahler (Greenwood Lake\George F. Baker) scored on a chip shot off of a left cross from Ciampa just 37 seconds into the half. The Bears added a third goal in the 82nd minute when Dylan Reed (Ogdensburg\Ogdensburg) scored off of a right cross from Sahler to close out the game.
The Bears outshot the Wildcats 17-13 in the contest. Each team committed 12 fouls and Potsdam held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Joseph Glackin (Latham\Shaker) earned the win for Potsdam after three saves in 90 minutes in the net. Freshman Riley Battaglini (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and junior Ryan Snyder (Dover Plains, NY/Dover Plains) each played 45 minutes in goal for Cazenovia. Battaglini allowed one goal and stopped three shots in the first half. Snyder let two get past him and recorded five saves.
Potsdam returns to action at Genseo next Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Bears Rout Canton
POTSDAM,
NY- After being held scoreless
for their first three games, the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team broke into the
scoring column as they defeated SUNY Canton 6-0 on Wednesday night.
Leading the Bears in scoring was Ron Burd (Branchport/Penn
Yan) with two. Billy Sahler (Greenwood Lake/George F. Baker), Zack LaDue
(Cohoes/Cohoes), Jon Reeves (Macedon/Pal-Mac), and Dylan Reed
(Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg) also scored goals.
Sahler scored Potsdam's
first goal of the night on a pass from Victor Colasacco (Oceanside/Oceanside)
and headed it in. Following a direct
kick, LaDue took the blocked shot from Canton's
defense and put it in for the Bears second goal of the game.
Joseph Glackin (Latham/Shaker) played 79:45 and made one
save. Colin MacIver (Westport/Westport)
came in for 10:15 and made two saves.
Eamon Case (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) had six saves for Canton.
Potsdam
dominated the game in shots with a 23-6 advantage.
The Bears head on the road to take on Keuka this Saturday at
2 pm.

2009 Season Outlook
Veteran men's soccer coach Joe Vaadi, now entering his 14th year at the helm at SUNY Potsdam, will welcome 12 returners as the Bears open their 2009 season. The Potsdam men will also add 13 new players including 7 freshmen.
The veterans are led by forward Dylan Reed (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg). Reed led the team last year in goals with eight. He will be joined in the field by seniors Brandon Kelley (Lisbon/Lisbon)Matt Rudd (Rodman/South Jefferson), juniors Tim Ciampa (Castleton/Maple Hill), and Jon Reeves (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon).
"We will be more defensive this year and use more of a team defense," Vaadi said. "We are a lot deeper than we have ever been." Kelley and sophomore Chris Mack (South Glen Falls/Soth Glen Falls) will both be anchors of the defense and will be joined by senior Ryan McAssey (Oceanside/Oceanside).
Freshmen contributions will include midfielder Zack Ladue (Cohoes/Cohoes) who scored 30 goals and had 50 assists at Cohoes High School.
Freshmen Joseph Glackin (Latham/Shaker) will see the most time in goal. Backing him up is fellow freshman Colin MacIver (Westport/Westport).
Other Potsdam newcomers include Christopher Riddell (St. Catherine's, ON/Holy Cross) and Mario Balzano (Johnstown/Johnstown) at midfield, Conor Harold (St. Catherine's ON/Holy Cross) at forward, and Sean Atkinson (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachean) and Victor Colasacco (Oceanside/Oceanside) on defense.
The Bears will be looking to improve on last year's 4-13-2 record. Besides improvements on defense, Vaadi sees improvement on offense too. "Offensively we will be a lot better and be more controlled and in sync," he said.
The men played SUNYT in their opener on Tuesday falling by a final score of 1-0. Their next game is in the Lotto Classic at St. Lawrence on Saturday when they go against cross-town rival Clarkson at 2 pm.
