Golf Finishes Third at ECAC Championship

VICTOR, NY- The men's golf team continued its strong season play as they came in third at the ECAC Division III Update/Metro Championships held at the Ravenwood Golf Club this past weekend.

The team finished with a total score of 606 and +30 which was behind second place New York University. The best individual finish was from Benton Sullivan (Massena) who came in tied for second place with a +2.  Chad Shippee (Corinth) was tied for 11th with a +8.  Other finishers included Casey McHugh (Lake Clear) and Shawn Thomas (Alex Bay) in 15th place with a +10 and Lee Shippee (Corinth) in 31st place with a +15.

The Bears conclude their season at the Hamilton Invitational next weekend.

Golfers Win Oswego Invitational

Oswego, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's golf team won the Oswego State Invitational Golf Tournament with a score of 307 to earn their second win of the season. Massena's Benton Sullivan fired a 73 for the Bears to receive medalist honors at Monday's event.

Shawn Thomas, an Alex Bay native, finished second with a score of 75.
Other Potsdam scores include Chad Shippee (Corinth) 76, Lee Shippee (Corinth) 83 and Kenny Rhodes (Cocheton) 85.

Clarkson and Elmira tied for second place at Oswego with team rounds of 324 while the hosting Lakers finished fourth out of the eleven teams.

The Bears return to action this weekend when they will play at the Middlebury Tournament.

Potsdam Wins Bears Fall Invitational

POTSDAM, NY- The men's golf team won their first tournament of the season as they competed with three other schools in the Bears Fall Invitational held at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.

Benton Sullivan (Massena) had the best finish for the team as he came in second overall with a score of 74 which was one stroke behind tournament winner Jon Tedesco (Clifton Park) from Clarkson. Chad Shippee (Corinth) shot a 75 to finish in a tie for third place.

The next top finishers were Ken Rhoades (Cocheton) with a 77 and Shawn Thomas (Alex Bay) with a 78. Shane Laurie (Canton) shot an 83.

 The team will compete next in the St. Lawrence Invitational this coming weekend.

Bears 2009 Outlook

POTSDAM, NY- Golf coach Rick Berkman, now entering his eighth year guiding the golf program, returns six players from last year's team.  The Bears had a successful year in 2008 with their best finishes coming in second at the ECAC Tournament and third at the Oswego Invitational and Hobart-Nazareth Tournament.

Kenny Rhodes (Cocheton, NY), Shane Laurie (Canton, NY), Chad and Lee Shippee (Corinth, NY), Casey McHugh (Lake Clear, NY), and Benton Sullivan (Massena, NY) are the team's returners and will be joined by two newcomers on this season's roster. Laurie and Sullivan had the team's best individual performances last season.  Laurie came in second at Elmira with a +2 and tied for second at Oswego with a +4.  Sullivan was second at ECACs with a +8.  

The Bears rookies include freshmen Shawn Thomas (Alex Bay, NY) and junior Brian Hilts (Lafargeville, NY).

The team opened its season September 8 at the Bears Fall Invitational held at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.  They won the tournament as a team with the best individual finish by Sullivan with a 74 which was one stroke behind the winner. 

The team's next tournament is this weekend (9/11 and 9/12) at the St. Lawrence Invitational.
